Someone told me not so long ago that at the turn of the 19th century personal services was the largest employment category in Australia. Seems 100 years later we are heading that way again. Jim's Group (known in the early days as Jim's Mowing) has now spawned 2300 franchises businesses in various segments of personal services, from computer repairs to dog washing.
In fact, Australia has gone nuts for franchising. The allure of controlling one's own destiny is a strong pull, and many Australians, particularly baby boomers and early Gen Xers, are turning their backs on working for others and trying their hands running retail, food and service businesses. Growth in total franchise numbers is now running at 12% - around three to four times beyond regular business growth. All of which was the focus of my recent cover story for MyBusiness magazine, the draft of which you can read here: Download mybusiness_franchises.rtf
