Next - Dial for almost anything

Most of my tech writing is business-oriented, but a part of me will always love gadgets. So sometimes it's fun to take a peek into the future of what today's devices might evolve into. That was my brief for this article for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age technology section, Next. You can check out my vision of the future of mobile phones by clicking here. Definitely worth checking out are the innovations coming from Adelaide-based Digislide.

Business of Entertainment seminar now online

A few weeks back I hosted a seminar for the Australian Technology Showcase, Stanford Australia Association and AIMIA on the Business of Entertainment. A podcast of the session can now be heard at the Showcase website, or by clicking here.

SmartCompany: 30 hot entrepreneurs aged 30 and under

I'll admit it - trying to narrow down a list of 30 of Australia's best entrepreneurs aged 30 and under is no easy task. So for this exercise for SmartCompany I defined the task as finding 30 entrepreneurs aged 30 and under worth watching. For that reason I left out a couple of who are already well known, and included a few from left field who show promise even in the early stage of their ventures. Take a look and let me know what you think - I suspect the greatest feedback will be from those who didn't make the cut ... For the full feature, click here.

Web Direrections South returns

Great to hear today from John Allsopp that the Web Directions South conference will be returning to Sydney from September 23 through 26.This year's event includes 10 international speakers across 30 sessions and three tracks.Sounds like a great line-up too. Check out the website for full details.

NSW Enterprise Workshop event - Understanding and Engaging Your Market

I've known Charles Lindop for a good number of years, initially through his work with the Australian Technology Park. I won't be able to make it along to the NSW Enterprise Workshop session that he is hosting on the 29th, but I would urge anyone in Sydney with a free evening and an interest in understanding markets for start-up companies to think about dropping by. More from CSIRO at CeBIT 2008

I've posted several more entries up to the CSIROatCeBIT blog, along with new videos over at YouTube. You can check them out here (blog) and here (video), and there'll be plenty more to come tomorrow. The latest round includes conversations with telecommunications analyst Paul Budde, Optus manager of research and development Peter Feraud, Clinical Excellence Commission Board chairman Prof Bruce Barraclough, and various vignettes on CSIRO research projects here and here.

Digital Media - The Export Edition

The fifth edition of B&T's Digital Media magazine is now available online. I was lucky enough to contribute quite a bit to this one. Given that edition 5 is the Export edition, my main feature is the follow-up to a digital media mission to New York organised by AIMIA and Austrade. That mission saw a bunch of innovative Aussie digital media companies including ShadoCMS. m.Net Corporation, Ish Media and TigerSpike meet with some of the most important digital and mainstream agencies in New York. I was lucky enough to be in New York at the time to follow what was happening. You can read about that on page 20.

A second story on Silicon Valley-based Aussie entrepreneur Steven Goh from Mig33 is on page 28.

This edition also contains my profile Dan Fill, the head of multiplatform production at the ABC, talking about his working life in Canada and Australia. That story, The Man from Aunty, is on page 18. I also interviewed Dan some months ago for a Domain function in Melbourne - you can listen to the podcast here.

My final story is a feature on Australia's lack of IPTV services (including a profile of Alcatel-Lucent's Belgian community IPTV service LommelTV, and the second part of my interview with Telstra's CEO Sol Trujillo). This one starts on page 34. IPTV is effectively a non-event in Australia, but that doesn't mean that existing television services aren't under threat from other modes of delivery.

And for those who haven't done so, you can sign up to the Digital Media electronic newsletter here.

Reporting from CeBIT 2008

Sorry for the slack posting record of late. In truth it's been due to a heavier-than-usual workload (too many interesting things happening at once), but also some of my efforts have been engaged in a blogging project for the CSIRO, related to its presence at this year's CeBIT exhibition in Sydney. CSIRO has asked me to put together a series of blog and video-log entries (it's a paid gig). I'll re-post some of the content here, but pleasin the meantime please check out the blog entries here, and the videos are going up to YouTube here.

ANZA Bridge to the US program returns to Australia

For much of the past decade I've been attending the ANZA Technology Network conference and showcase in Silicon Valley. They've been a great opportunity to see a small group of Australian and New Zealand emerging exporters gathered together in one place. Over the years the program has expanded its reach, and later this month ANZA will be hosting a series of events around Australia and New Zealand to introduce aspiring exporters to its programs. If you want to find out more, click here.
