Hey Brad, when I was in the States my team at H&K developed the 20th anniversary of the mobile phone campaign for Motorola. Here are some key dates we identified (with an obvious Motorola leaning) which may help your article:

1983 - Motorola introduces the world's first "cellular portable radio telephone" (the DynaTac 8000X) and begins taking orders.

1984 - Motorola is the first to ship a commercial portable cellular phone (retail price of $3,995).

1989 - Motorola sets a new design standard with a flip-lid mouthpiece with the MicroTAC, retailing between $2,495 and $3,495.

1994 - Motorola's iDEN network is unveiled, integrating paging, data communications, voice dispatch and wireless telephone capabilities - making a host of features available in one handset.

2001 - Motorola industry's world first anodized aluminum housing with the Motorola V60

2002 - Motorola V70 changes design standards as first rotating cover and circular display

2002 - Motorola's first color screen was launched, the T720 (not sure who in the industry was first)

2002 - Motorola introduced a camera attachment but not sure who had the first embedded camera

2003 - the Motorola A760 was the world's first handset to combine Linux OS and Java
