Gamers to start using their brains?
Several months ago, while researching a Red Herring article on the state of the Australian VC industry, I came across an interesting Australian tech developer that had migrated its management to Silicon Valley. Mike Zimmerman had told me of how his team at the Australian VC fund Technology Venture Partners had pumped funds into the start-up, Emotiv, who's field of expertise immediately caught my attention - allowing gamers to interact with and control their game experience using brainwaves.
I was subsequently able to visit the Emotiv team at their San Francisco offices (their R&D remains in Sydney) and get the run-down on what could potentially be a major shift not only in how we play games, but how we interact with technology of all kinds.
The Emotiv technology has several modes, but most interesting for gamers is the way that it can read brain electricity signals using a lightweight headset, which can then be interpretted to control aspects of the game. Users can train themselves to manipulate objects on screen using thought alone (think along the lines of Vader using the Force to pound Luke with machinery towards the end of The Empire Strikes Back, and you'll start to see the potential).
The Emotiv device is expected to reach consumers in 2008, with a pricetag of around US$150 (as opposed to the US$250 figure quoted in the story). You can read the full story here:Download Emotiv.pdf
I want to say something about this site. This site gives the information relating to the brainwaves regarding binaural beat secrets and brain electricity signals using a lightweight headset, which can then be interpreted to control aspects of the game.
